Nicafrance has developed an agroforrestation model, mixing coffee with forest plantations with native varieties from the area. They use a coffee variety that is called Marsellesa and that is more resistant to climate changes and to the coffee rust disease.
José Eduardo Aroyo: “I am breeding a cow that is more resistant to diseases and produces more milk. If we want to buy a cow like that right now it’s very expensive. The price of milk is fixed by the government and too low, while the costs are rising. That’s why I want to breed a good cow myself. We have just finished the second phase of breeding, so it will take another 5 to 6 years to have the right result.”
